Due Date Menu for Expecting Parents: how to cultivate more peace and less stress when you are full term

Hey you, are you close to your due date? I have some advice for you (and a free download below). While there’s a tendency to rush the process as you near 40 weeks (or beyond), I offer you some gentle doula wisdom.

While you are SO EXCITED to meet your baby and likely SO TIRED of being pregnant, resist the urge to wear yourself out doing all the diy-type induction stuff. Instead I recommend you plan to make the end of your pregnancy a special time and not a stressful time.

Easier said than done (I have totally been there myself and I GET IT). However, on a hormonal and emotional level, the things your body actually *needs to go into labor, may be different than you have been told. Instead of feeling pressured to jumpstart labor through strenuous activities, I encourage my families to consider planning a due date “menu”. The following is a list of items and activities I recommend to protect your peace and save your energy during the final days of pregnancy.

Psst did you know the current definition of a full term pregnancy doesn’t start until 39 weeks?

Menu Item 1: Oxytocin Boosters

Oxytocin, often referred to as the "love hormone," plays a significant role in labor and bonding. Instead of aggressively bouncing on your birth ball, opt for activities that naturally boost oxytocin levels:

  • Increase Cuddles: Spend quality time with your partner, indulge in gentle massages, and relish the comfort of physical closeness.

  • Emotional Comfort: Engage in activities that bring you joy and all the ooey gooey feelings, like your favorite movie or book.

  • Surround Yourself with Love: Foster a supportive environment by connecting with loved ones and spend time with people who help you feel calm and safe.

Menu Item 2: Privacy and Boundaries

Protecting your mental and emotional space is crucial during the final stretch of pregnancy. Create a sanctuary for yourself and your partner by:

  • Disconnecting: Turn off your phone or set specific times to check messages. Remember, you don't owe anyone your time and attention.

  • Establishing Boundaries: Communicate your need for privacy to friends and family. Set clear expectations about visits and calls, allowing you to focus on your well-being.

Menu Item 3: Pampering Session

Acknowledge the incredible work your body is doing and treat yourself to some well-deserved pampering:

  • Self-Care Rituals: Take luxurious baths, indulge in skincare routines, or book a prenatal massage to alleviate tension and promote relaxation.

  • Positive Affirmations: Remind yourself of the strength and beauty of your body. Embrace the changes and celebrate the journey you've been through.

Menu Item 4: Rest and Gentle Movement

Resist the urge to overexert yourself in an attempt to hasten labor. Instead, prioritize rest and incorporate gentle movement:

  • Quality Sleep: Ensure you get adequate rest during the night to conserve energy for the upcoming labor.

  • Gentle Exercise: Engage in light  exercises like prenatal yoga or short walks to keep your body active without causing fatigue.

Menu Item 5: Patience

Finally, celebrate the incredible journey your body has undertaken in growing a new life. Practice gratitude and patience:

  • Thank Your Body: Reflect on the miraculous process of pregnancy and acknowledge the strength within you.

  • Avoid Rushing: Embrace the uncertainty of the due date. Your body knows when it's time, so trust the process.

While you’d probably rather celebrate 40 weeks with a baby in your arms, find a way to embrace the final stretch with love, patience and self care. Make a plan so you can enjoy a more peaceful and positive end of your pregnancy and leave the stress behind.
